The Daydreamer Cocktail at Nostrana ~ This is Cocktail Treasure
This past summer I had an extraordinary cocktail in Portland, Oregon at Nostrana – The Daydreamer.
Right off the bat the description of this drink caught my eye for two reasons:
First – they said this cocktail was “a campfire on a beach you can’t quite place” and there are few things I like more than a campfire on a beach.
Second – the list of ingredients began with three words that both baffled me and captivated me – “coconut washed bourbon”
I love coconut and I love bourbon – yet up to that point in my life I had never thought about mixing the two together.
I checked to make that I was reading the cocktail menu correctly and sure enough I was – this intriguing cocktail truly did feature bourbon that had been coconut washed.
A Campfire on a Beach You Can’t Quite Place
The full description of this cocktail was – “A campfire on a beach you can’t quite place – coconut washed bourbon, amaro Montenegro pineapple demerara, chipotle cacao bitters & Laphroaig mist”
I ordered the Daydreamer and waited with great anticipation to see to see what I would find when I took my first sip.
Once I did take that first sip, I was blown away.
This is a cocktail that at the same time is both decadently simple and delightfully complex. All of the seemingly (to me) disparate ingredients came together beautifully forming a most harmonious chorus.
And Yes! The bourbon did have a subtle coconut flavor that seduced my tongue and made me wish I was enjoying this cocktail sitting by fire on a beach in the Caribbean or on the Oregon Coast.
Cheers,
